    CRED Academy

Are you interested in learning about the commercial and legal realities of property and land acquisition? Do you want to know how buildings are constructed and ‘fit out works’ completed? Have you thought about what happens when property disputes arise and how to resolve them?

Our Construction, Real Estate & Disputes (CRED) Academy is an interactive insights programme for undergraduates and graduates interested in the commercial property, construction and disputes sector.

Apply to our Construction, Real Estate & Disputes Academy – the CRED Academy - to immerse yourself in the commercial property, construction and disputes world, network with leading lawyers in the industry, and boost your applications for training contract opportunities.

What does the CRED Academy involve?

The Real Estate and Construction Academy consists of 4 x in-person interactive workshops from April – July 2025, which will help you build understanding of the legal and commercial issues at play.

The first 3 sessions will cover each area of the Construction, Real Estate and Disputes division. You will be given the opportunity to:

  • Learn about and discuss commercial and legal challenges
  • Meet the wider team and build your network with leading property lawyers.
  • Work as a group to navigate an exciting case study where you can build your legal skills and wider understanding of clients – see more information below.

Our Real Estate and Construction Academy will follow the purchase and construction of ‘Eastmeadow’, an exciting (fictional) new retail and leisure centre. You will have the opportunity to advise a client on the whole property lifecycle and try your hand at advising the landlord and tenants on issues that arise once the centre is up and running.

The 4th session will be with the Early Talent team to tie your learning together and discuss how you can showcase your learnings if you go on to apply for training contracts or graduate schemes in the legal or property sector.

The Real Estate and Construction Academy dates are as below and we would expect candidates to attend all 4 sessions.

Sessions will be in person at our London office – 5 Fleet Place, London, EC4M 7RD. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered, and refreshments will be provided. As part of our Sustainable Recruitment Alliance pledge, we recommend where possible for candidates to travel via public transport.

Application process

We have 20 places available on the Real Estate and Construction Academy Scheme.

Applications open on 24 February (midday) and close on 17 March (midday). You’ll submit an application form through our Candid Application Portal.

Applications are open to anyone currently studying at university (1st years included), anyone studying a post-graduate course, or anyone who has already graduated.

Please note - you don’t need to be studying law or have confirmed your interest in a career in law. We are looking for individuals with a sector interest in property and construction.

If you have already applied to a Placement Scheme or Direct Training Contract role in the 2024-2025 cycle, you are still welcome to apply, however we will prioritise your attendance at a Placement Scheme if you are offered a place on a Placement Scheme.

Property law is relevant to so many areas, including everyday life. The CRED Academy will give attendees a great introduction to the sector, and the huge variety in the work which we do."

I never thought I'd work in property law until I tried it - if only I'd known sooner how much I'd enjoy it in practice!"

Session 1: Real Estate

Wednesday 23 April 2025 - pm

The first session will focus on the real estate elements of the land acquisition.  We will explore the terms of the acquisition and our client’s priorities; navigating legal due diligence; negotiating with the seller; and then once the land is acquired and Eastmeadow has been built, granting a lease to a major retailer.

Session 2: Construction

Wednesday 7 May 2025 - pm

In the second session, you will be taken through our client’s journey starting from the tender process and help us appoint contractors and consultants to get the building of Eastmeadow underway.

Having already explored the lease in the real estate session, look through the lens of both the landlord and the tenant to consider what they might need to consider in the course of carrying out fit-out works at Eastmeadow.

Session 3: Real Estate Disputes

Monday 16 June 2025 - pm

Eastmeadow is now up and running yet cracks have started to show. You will have the opportunity to  resolve the issues caused when some retail stores are not performing as well as they had hoped, and a restaurant tenant would like to move to a more favourable location.

Session 4: Early Talent

Tuesday 15 July 2025 - pm

The final session will involve reflecting on the previous sessions and understanding how you can use what you’ve learnt when applying for training contracts or other graduate opportunities.

FAQs

What do we look for?

Ideally we look for a minimum of 2:1 in your degree (or on track for a 2:1 if you are still studying your undergraduate degree), but we also look at the full application form and any mitigating circumstances alongside this.

As part of the application form, you’ll also include your ‘work experience’ – this doesn’t just include paid experiences so please add unpaid experiences, virtual sessions, insight days, volunteering and positions of responsibility too.  The work experience doesn’t need to be in the property or legal sector so include everything you can, even if you aren’t sure it’s relevant. The most important thing is to highlight your responsibilities, transferable skills, achievements and key learnings.

You’ll also answer 2 written questions designed to understand your interest in the property and construction sector, and reasons for applying.  It’s important for you to showcase your research into the firm and wider industry, so please make use of a variety or sources and tell us about these in your application.  We want to see lots of detail and reasoning, so tell us what specifically interests you and why is key.  Some candidates may find the ‘Point, Example, Explanation’ structure useful to ensure you have given detailed reasoning for each point you make.

Finally, strong attention to detail is key so please double check your application before submitting it.

Whilst the Training Contract and Placement Scheme applications are slightly longer, there is useful guidance on our website and social media that can still be applied to your Real Estate and Construction Academy application. We recommend looking at our website here and following us on Instagram (@crstrainees) and TikTok (@crsearlytalent) for further updates and tips.

What if I need support or an adjustment during the recruitment process or during the Real Estate and Construction Academy Scheme?

As a Firm, we are committed to providing an environment where candidates and our people have access to the support and tools they need to ensure they have an excellent experience during our application process and whilst they are at the Firm. This includes supporting with adjustments which would enable candidates to perform to the best of their ability during the application process and once their programme commences.

Examples of adjustments we can make include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing documents in large print or accessible formats
  • Allowing additional time for tasks that form part of the assessment process
  • Ensuring the interview location is accessible
  • Any other support you may need relating to a disability or health condition.

If you would like to discuss any adjustments that might assist you during the application process, or during the Real Estate and Construction Academy programme, then please contact our Early Talent Team.

Any information you disclose will be kept confidential unless otherwise instructed by you, and will only be used to provide appropriate support to you during our assessment process.

What happens after the Real Estate and Construction Academy?

Optional Essay Competition

We will invite our Real Estate and Construction Academy participants to write about their experience during the Real Estate and Construction Academy and there will be an exciting prize for the winner!

Applying for Training Contracts

If you like what you’ve learnt, you may decide that a career in commercial property or construction law interests you.  If this is the case, we would encourage you to apply for a Placement Scheme or Training Contract when our applications open in the next round. Information on all our opportunities can be found here and applications usually open in October and close in January each year. You’ll be able to harness your learning about the firm and property work we do, making you a strong candidate.

Candidates who successfully receive a Training Contract will be able to make the most of our property focused seat rotations. Ideally you’d complete a minimum of 2 seats within our Construction, Real Estate and Disputes division, and then at least one complimentary seat in a different area of law to broaden your skill set and understanding of the firm.

For any questions about our wider opportunities, please get in touch with the Early Talent team.
